Chocolate Hemp Seed Snack Bar

These are your new go-to homemade snack bar, developed for us by Tajda Ferko (@myveganminimalist). Naturally sweetened with maple syrup and agave nectar and packed with a variety of seeds and nuts, these are rich in both flavour and nutrition. High in fibre, protein and omega-3, share with your mates, kids or grandma and they won’t stop asking for more. Top off with an optional chocolate layer to add a touch of indulgence (only optional if you’re a crazy person.) This recipe makes 16 bars, how every many servings that is can be up to you. Keep in an airtight container for up to four days.

Cooked using

Hemp Seed Hearts

  • 6 tbsp hemp seeds
  • 6 tbsp sunflower seeds
  • 300g rolled oats
  • 4 tbsp flax seeds
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 40g chopped hazelnuts
  • 150g vegan butter
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 25g light muscovado sugar
  • 100g maple syrup
  • 150g agave nectar
  • 200g 70% dark chocolate (optional)
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil (optional)
  • Salt flakes


Pre-heat the oven to 180°C. Melt the butter, vanilla extract, sugar, maple syrup and agave nectar in a small pan on low to medium heat.

Once fully melted and combined, pour into a large bowl and add the rest of the ingredients (except dark chocolate, coconut oil and salt flakes which will be used to create the optional chocolate layer on top.) Stir well, making sure the dry ingredients are evenly distributed throughout the mixture.

Line a 9-inch square tin with baking paper and transfer your mixture to the tin, ensuring it’s evenly spread throughout. Use a flat spatula to firmly press down the mixture into the corners of the tin.

Bake for 25 minutes until golden brown around the edges. Whilst you wait for the bars to cool, prepare your chocolate layer.

Melt the chocolate and coconut oil in a microwave or using a bain marie until fully melted (careful not to burn!) Then, pour the melted chocolate on top of the bars, using a flat spatula again to ensure the chocolate is spread evenly.

Place into the fridge for 2 hours, and once set, cut into desired shapes and top off with salt flakes. Voila!

With the temperatures in So Cal over 100 degrees today, I’m glad to be making these raw energy bites because I sure don’t want to turn on the oven. Today, it’s all about salads, hemp heart energy bites and lots of water!

Keeping with this no-bake cookie mood I’m in, I’m doing another recipe using superfood hemp hearts. I ♥ hemp hearts, even my twelve year old daughter will grab a bowl and eat them by the fingers full.

These raw hemp heart energy bites are fantastic, and a nice mellow flavored cookie compared to my last, Chocolate, Pistachio, Oatmeal Energy Bites which is a bit more intensely flavored and chunky.

They taste well on their own and made even better with the different optional coatings making fun flavor variations. The cacao powder was my favorite!

Hemp Hearts – A Superfood!

Hemp hearts are a great source of omega 3 & 6 and are a high quality complete protein. Four tablespoons, or ¼ cup, of hemp seeds contain 11 grams of protein, and they’re also a good source of fiber at 2.5 grams per quarter cup.

Adding hemp seeds to your lifestyle will ensure you’re packing in some goodness here and there. They also contain high concentrations of vitamins and minerals such as iron, vitamin E, thiamine, riboflavin, folic acid, and many other micro-nutrients that your body needs.

Sprinkle them on salads, quinoa dishes or almost any main dish, cereals, use in cookies, breads, smoothies, or eaten as is. I always keep the bag I’m using in the fridge

Ingredients You’ll Need

In the recipe, a healthy mix of oats, hemp hearts, dates, and cinnamon are processed into a thick dough that’s rolled into healthy energy bites for a nourishing and delicious snack.

Here is everything you will need, plus ingredient substitution ideas:

  • oats – use old fashioned or quick oats
  • hemp hearts
  • dates – I used and recommend medjool dates, fresh as possible
  • pure maple syrup
  • cinnamon
  • vanilla

How To Make Hemp Heart Energy Bites

(Note – The full printable recipe is at the bottom of this post)

  • Start by adding the oats, hemp hearts, dates, maple syrup, vanilla, and cinnamon to the bowl of your food processor (shown above left), blend until combined (above right).

  • Scoop out rounded mounds using a 1 tablespoon measurer, pack into round balls, as shown above.
  • For a finishing touch, roll the balls in optional toppings such as cinnamon, cocoa, shredded coconut, or hemp hearts.

And voila, a healthy snack or dessert that can be enjoyed often!

Top Tips

  • Keep them uniform. Make the mounds uniform in size by using a scooper like this 1 tablespoon measuring spoon (affiliate link), it’s super helpful and makes things easier!
  • Keep your hands clean. If the dough starts to stick to the palm of your hands when rolling, wash them in between every few balls for ease.
  • No dates, no worries. If you rather not use dates or don’t have them on hand, you can sub with pure maple syrup using 1 – 2 extra tablespoons pure maple syrup.

How To Store

  • Refrigerator: Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
  • Freezer: For longer storage, energy balls will keep in the freezer for up to 2 – 3 months. To freeze, place the balls on a baking sheet or plate, about 1 inch apart, place in the freezer for a few hours (this will help them not stick together). Once frozen you can store them in freezer safe ziplock bags or containers. Let thaw in the refrigerator a few hours before snacking.

No bake, vegan and so easy to make, these healthy hemp heart energy bites are made with simple, wholesome ingredients!

  • 1 cup oats, rolled or quick (I used GF)
  • ½ cup hemp hearts
  • 6 medjool dates, pitted and chopped
  • 3 tablespoons puremaple syrup
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon, optional
  • pinch of salt, optional


Mix: Place all ingredients in food processor, blend until combined. Add 1 tablespoon water at time if needed to help the mixture clump up. I used about 1 tablespoon, use at your discretion.

Don’t worry if the dough seems a little too sticky, as it will become a bit stiffer once refrigerated. And if it’s a little sticky it will help when you roll the balls in a coating. If the mixture is too wet, try adding a pinch or two of oats. The dryer they are the more they will be a stiffer, but chewy cookie. The moister they are, they will be more like cookie dough. Both ways are good. 🙂

Scoop + roll: Next, roll the dough into one inch balls. If dough seems too sticky to roll, refrigerate the dough for about 20 minutes before rolling.

Finishing touch: You can roll the energy bites in a variety of ingredients for a nice finishing touch. I rolled some in hemp seeds, coconut, cinnamon and cacao powder. I wanted to experiment with different coatings. If rolling in powders be sure to gently lift and drop your coated balls a few times an inch or two above a hard surface to let any excess powder fall off.

Makes 12 energy bites

Store: Keep in the refrigerator and eat within 1 – 2 weeks. For longer storage, they can be kept in the freezer for up to 2 – 3 months.


If you rather not use dates or don’t have them on hand, you can sub with pure maple syrup using 1 – 2 extra tablespoons pure maple syrup, starting with the smaller amount.

Don’t worry about getting all the ingredients exact. If you add/subtract the spices they will still be great. You almost always can’t go wrong with these.

These are great for special occasions and can be made well in advance to keep life a little simpler.
